You might have seen the iconic Porsche 911 S with the number 277. This car became Magnus Walkers and also the Outlaw Porsche enthusiasts trademark. The design, with colour accents on the bumpers, the red hood with number and sponsors represents a time, when teams would enter cars with the similar look and feel to the main races, like the 24h of Le Mans 1970. Growing up during that period, the taste for those graphics stayed with me. After the first attempts converting the AFX Carrera to a 911 S, the idea grew to make more of the Porsche 911 entries at the 24h Le Mans 1970.

Having fun out on the track Porsche 911 from the 24h Le Mans 1970

Researching images of the various cars and background information proofed to be time consuming. 24h Le Mans 1970 seemed to be well documented. The internet has proven to be a great source for all sorts of information over the years. Finding detailed information on the teams and cars has proven to be rather difficult. Teams no longer exist. Sponsors changed logos or went out of business. Many images are of poor quality. Identifying names and graphics can take forever. Only by chance some of the logos could be identified. Some are still a vague reproduction of what was deciphered. Still the little Porsche 911 S look good and perform well on the track.

All of the cars sport an AFX Magnatraction chassis, like most of my custom-built slot cars  Wheels are mostly RRR or similar AFX rims with Custom FX Fuchs inserts. Bodies are based on the AFX Porsche Carrera. All bodies underwent modification on front and rear spoilers and bumpers, the rear-view mirror was removed, a lump on the driver’s side. All the cars were treated with great care. All the paint removed, sanded, base coat applied, sanded, painted and repeated if necessary. Window trim, headlights, exhausts etc. were detailed with Revell Aqua Paint. Some decals came from Le Mans decals. Others are custom made decals for better proportions and detail, printed by Decal Print. The Porsche 911s are a nice addition the growing collection of h0 slot cars, representing the 1970 Le Mans grid.

Unknown Heroes 24h Le Mans 1970 Porsche 911S

We all know the winning Porsche 917K Porsche Salzburg #23. Most would not know who came second or third that year. The Porsche 917L Martini Racing Team #3 driven by Gérad Larrousse and Willi Kausen finished in second place. Helmut Marko and Rudi Lins came third with the Martini Racing Team Porsche 908/2LH #27.

But there were several Porsche 911S participating in the event. Private entries with little hope for the big success. All off them displaying unique and compelling liveries. Unfortunately, these cars were not as well documented as the ones entered by powerful companies or racing teams. It took some time to find some reliable sources in order to recreate the liveries with logos from unknow companies that went out of business some time ago. Modelers like myself are not historians and do not necessarily have all the resources and contacts to retrieve the desired information. Still, some of the 911S have come to fruition. Even thou they are only h0 slot cars with all the drawbacks, they recreate some of the spirit of these days.

Here is a teaser - the #65 Porsche 911S Hart Ski Racing Team Claude Haldi / Arthur Blank.

The name of Claude Haldi popped up frequently during research. It became obvious that Claude Haldi, a Swiss driver, had entered the 24h of Le Mans on serval occasions with little success. And to my surprise I had made some of these cars into slot cars over the years.

The 911S was made from an AFX Porsche Carrera. Front spoiler had to be reworked. The rear spoiler was removed. And the rear bumper underwent subtle changes. The rear-view mirror had to be removed. It looks like a lump, not much of a mirror. After reworking the body on all of the 911S, base coat was applied, sanded, another layer of base coat, sanded and painted. Custom decals for all the cars had to be designed and printed. Details painted, fog lights added on some and the right rims mounted to the chassis. The front wheels mainly feature the Fuchs inserts by Custom FX.

These Cars had been sitting around for some time, almost finished, with minor issues still not solved. Fortunately, most don´t show in the pictures. The pictures were taken with the cars lapping Forest Hill, my first slot car track to scale for 1:64 h0 slot cars. I still like to use the track to shoot images of my customized slotcars. The track is relatively small and therefor most areas are very accessible. I hope you will enjoy the presentation. If you like, you can also visit Reims 64, my latest slot track project, representing Circuit Reims-Gueux in its glorious days in the 1960s.

One of the mysteries for me in the choice of slotcars is the fact that there not one manufacturer attempted making a Jaguar E-Type for AFX like chassis. Therefore, I have been on the hunt for an E-Type to be converted to fit the AFX chassis for some time. The Jaguar shown in pictures was made from a T-Jet style body. Mounts added to the body and wheels on the chassis move in. Those are actually RRR wires made for the smaller chassis. The decals resemble the number on the race cars in the 50s and 60s. It could have been a Jaguar participating in the Targa Florio or such. I still would love to make some Lightweight Jaguar E-Types.

Everything you need to know about the Jaguar D-type

The D-Type was a present from my friend Tom Druckenmiller. He has been a great inspiration and mentor when I came to the hobby a little while back. When I saw one of his cars, a Lola T 260 , on ebay, I had to contact him and ask about the track. He was very friendly and gave me all the insides of the track, many pictures. This marked the moment when I felt I wanted to get into designing and detailing race tracks. We had such a great exchange over a long period. He has retired from the hobby some time ago. Many of you might still remember his track Kastelburg. Images of the track can be found at h0slot.ch. Not to forget another great soured for inspiration at the time: Oldslotracer from Canada, always worth a visit.

The body was original made to fit T-Jet style chassis. I like the speed and handling of the AFX Magnatractions. Making the bodies fit the chassis can be challenging. I like it best if the wheels fit within the wheel arches. This is still an issue the 356. I hope to find a solution for the wheels and make others, because I like the look of the car. There many inspirational designs to be found on the internet for the 356.This would be one to make into a slot car, don´t you think? Resin bodies are available from taillights_fade on eBay.

This body was bought some time ago. It had to be shortened to fit the AFX Magnatraction. Driver and windshield added. It is one of the many sportscars from England I liked as a teenager. An Austin Healy 3000 was my dream car at the time. Well making all the custom slot cars is maybe what is left of my love for automobiles - older automobiles.

A Lola T70 has been on the wish list for some time. Eventually two bodies were purchased. The bodies are vacuum formed from thin Polystyrene, with many flaws and little detail. Because they were the only ones to be found over a longer period of time, they were made into #42 with Danny Hulme winning the Tourist Trophy in 1968 and #2 with John Surtees (GB) and David Hobbs (GB) appearing at Brands Hatch in 1967. It took several attempts to prepare the bodies. Filling, sanding, cutting, filling, sanding until the bodies could be primed and painted. Decals from Pattos were applied and the clear coated. The two run on AFX Magna Traction chassis. Mounts for these chassis had been installed to the bodies earlier on. Even thou the two cars lack details they have become a nice addition to the growing collection of race cars of the 1960s and 1970s.

Denny Hulme took his Sid Taylor Racing prepared Lola T70 Mk.3 to his third TT win in four years, winning with an aggregated time of 3hrs 03:57.200mins., averaging a speed of 99.074 mph. Just 9.4 seconds behind in second place was David Piper, who shared his Ferrari 412 P with Richard Attwood. Attwood joined Piper following the demise of his pole winning Ford P68. Third place was attained by Paul Hawkins, in his Ford GT40, albeit one lap adrift. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968_RAC_Tourist_Trophy

Practice

Qualifying was dominated by works Porsches. They took the first 4 positions on the grid; pole position went to the Jo Siffert/Brian Redman car, followed by Pedro Rodriguez/Leo Kinnunen, Vic Elford/Kurt Ahrens, Jr., and then Hans Herrmann/Richard Attwood. They were followed by a works Alfa Romeo T33/3 of Rolf Stommelen/Piers Courage, and the 2 works Ferrari 512S Spyders of Ignazio Giunti/Arturo Merzario and John Surtees/Nino Vaccarella.Quelle:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970_1000km_of_N%C3%BCrburgring

Once again, I was intrigued by the liveries of two Porsche @ Le Mans. The Cachia - Bondy #70 and HCC Skiwear, two cars, representing the 70s approach in design and fashion, with bright colors and bold graphics. Because the decals were not available in 1:64 scale, it was necessary to custom make those as well. Researching logos and type from the area is time consuming but will sometimes reveal interesting aspects. Not all sponsors have survived to the very day. Therefore, information is scarce in many cases. Today we think in corporate design, including a color code. It seems in the 70s people would use what was available. The cars would participate in races and were not considered irreplaceable artifacts.

The bodies for the Porsche 911 RSR derive from the AFX Porsche 934/5. The body had to be heavily modified in the front and back. The fenders were flared slightly. Resin bodies were casted from a prototype. Some of the cars feature an interior. The ones in question are still in need of a cockpit. All the custom bulit Porsche 911 RSR and 934 sport the AFX Magnatraction chassis with custom wheels, trying to represent the original. A good source for inserts is Custom FX. Anthony Hill makes photo etched inserts of the popular BBS or Fuchs rims.

Every custom built goes thru various steps from preparation to detailing to finishing to provide the desired quality. With each built experience grows and ideas change how to approach a model. Discovering the sources for correct team colors made live easier. Judging color from images is very difficult. The same car looks very different on each picture. Especially the Vaillant green has proven to be tricky. The yellow and green of these two featured cars in this post have been carefully chosen. Bright green and Orange, sometime even fluorescent, were popular. VW used the bright colors on a Jeans Käfer with the younger customers in the 1970s.
