Shelby Cobra Daytona Goodwood Members’ Meeting Tribute
One of many times researching for images on the internet an unusual Cobra Daytona showed up - Goodwood Members’ Meeting Ecurie Francorchamps DK Engineering. Besides the red Daytonas from 24h Le Mans 1965 Peter Sutcliffe / Peter Harper and the white from Nürburgring 1965 Jo Schlesser/Andre Simon all appear in metallic blue. Because it is difficult to identify colors on basis of photos from that period it was difficult to tell the shade of blue.
The Cobra in question was entered to the Goodwood Members meeting by DK Engineering. The paint scheme seemed period correct with a twist. The yellow stripe across the bonnet referred to a common appearance of the Cobras. The green gave it a twist because it did not look familiar to me. I had to give it a go, made the decals and mixed up a green that matched the green in the photos, at least that is what I thought and think. On a later project, a GT40, I used the color once again, because I liked the look on the race cars from the period.
Basis for the custom built was a AFX Tomy Shelby Cobra. It underwent the standard treatment. Original paint was removed, body cleaned ang primed. The decals had to be custom made to fit the Cobras body. Window decals had been designed earlier on. Decals Print produced the decals. The quality of the decals helps a lot. Details are painted before applying the decals. Clear coat was sprayed on to protect the artwork.
The car runs on a AFX Magnatraction chassis, like most of my custom slot cars. The chassis is easy to maintain and performs to my liking without strong magnets and easy to control. All chassis will be cleaned and worn parts are replaced. Unfortunately, over time it has become more of difficult to find replacement. The Road Race Replica Cobra rims add to the overall looks.
The DK Cobra with two Cobras customized by my friend Tom Druckemiller, he has been a great mentor and supporter for many years
