Practice

Qualifying was dominated by works Porsches. They took the first 4 positions on the grid; pole position went to the Jo Siffert/Brian Redman car, followed by Pedro Rodriguez/Leo Kinnunen, Vic Elford/Kurt Ahrens, Jr., and then Hans Herrmann/Richard Attwood. They were followed by a works Alfa Romeo T33/3 of Rolf Stommelen/Piers Courage, and the 2 works Ferrari 512S Spyders of Ignazio Giunti/Arturo Merzario and John Surtees/Nino Vaccarella.Quelle:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970_1000km_of_N%C3%BCrburgring

Once again, I was intrigued by the liveries of two Porsche @ Le Mans. The Cachia - Bondy #70 and HCC Skiwear, two cars, representing the 70s approach in design and fashion, with bright colors and bold graphics. Because the decals were not available in 1:64 scale, it was necessary to custom make those as well. Researching logos and type from the area is time consuming but will sometimes reveal interesting aspects. Not all sponsors have survived to the very day. Therefore, information is scarce in many cases. Today we think in corporate design, including a color code. It seems in the 70s people would use what was available. The cars would participate in races and were not considered irreplaceable artifacts.

The bodies for the Porsche 911 RSR derive from the AFX Porsche 934/5. The body had to be heavily modified in the front and back. The fenders were flared slightly. Resin bodies were casted from a prototype. Some of the cars feature an interior. The ones in question are still in need of a cockpit. All the custom bulit Porsche 911 RSR and 934 sport the AFX Magnatraction chassis with custom wheels, trying to represent the original. A good source for inserts is Custom FX. Anthony Hill makes photo etched inserts of the popular BBS or Fuchs rims.

Every custom built goes thru various steps from preparation to detailing to finishing to provide the desired quality. With each built experience grows and ideas change how to approach a model. Discovering the sources for correct team colors made live easier. Judging color from images is very difficult. The same car looks very different on each picture. Especially the Vaillant green has proven to be tricky. The yellow and green of these two featured cars in this post have been carefully chosen. Bright green and Orange, sometime even fluorescent, were popular. VW used the bright colors on a Jeans Käfer with the younger customers in the 1970s.

Many of the model race cars made over the years share a common dilemma, they were lingering in a box or drawer some times for years. It seems that at times a certain make catches attention. In the time span from researching to finalisation the projects evolves and new aspects and other cars divert attention. It is not unusual that bodies, that were almost ready for painting and detailing, find themselves desperately awaiting the final touches.

The FORD Escort always appeared on the screen while researching others cars. The significant design with the two-colour paint scheme in silver and blue or gold and red was especially appealing. Knowing how tricky it can become to paint along a bodyline the idea was postponed several times.

Eventually two Ford Escort from the 500 km Nürburgring 1968 were chosen and transformed into a Slot car. Basis was the Aurora AFX Escort. The procedure was the same as with many others before. Stripping the paint, applying basecoat and paint. Decals were individually designed and printed for the models. Clear coat protects the artwork and give the final touch. Rims on the AFX Magnatraction chassis received individual touches to resemble the original.

Prior to these two examples some phantasy liveries were designed for the Ford Escort representing popular sponsors of the period. The beautiful red, white and gold of the GOLD LEAF TEAM LOTUS was adapted as well as the ROTHMANs dark blue with the red, white and striping. SHELL wrapped the car in bold yellow with some red accents.

As it has become difficult to find more AFX Escorts for a decent price there is no need to worry about any other ideas that would distract from current projects. Even though some interesting examples came up looking for an idea for the last Escort. The look of these Escorts could be adapted to a LANCIA HP 1600. This is another car that will get more attention in the near future.

Zwei Porsche 934 Modelle im Maßstab 1:64
Porsche 934 Slot Cars 24 Stunden Le Mans 1976 / 1981

Modellauto Porsche 934 24h Le Mans 1981 Denver

Many of the slotcars featured in this block are based on Aurora AFX slot cars from the 1970s. Even if it was no conscious decision, Porsche models appear to be on the majority. Over the years many of the AFX Carrera were modelled to reassemble actual race cars of the period. At first, the main aspects of the transformation mainly consisted of changing the paint and adding decals of the desired livery. Most of the role models came from images of cars that had been racing at the 24 hours Le Mans. A fact that was also not applicable from the start.

Only by researching more carefully it became clear that many of the race car icons had been racing in long distance races in that period. But that could also be caused by preference of racing connected with the time we were teen-agers. The Porsche 911 Carrera RSRS #46 and #47 from the 24h Le Mans with the significant wing/spoiler on the rear look intriguing. The question was how to add the side parts of the wing, flare the fenders and modify the front spoiler.

Porsche 911 RSR Martini Racing BP Sunauto Le Mans 1973
24h Le Mans 1973- Porsche 911 Carrera RSR

Sometimes it takes a little longer to achieve the desired results. At first paper mock ups helped to establish the shape for the extensions of the rear spoiler. The body had been stripped and cleaned. After that the pieces were cut from polystyrene and mounted to the body. Diluted polystyrene was brushed onto to smooth the connecting areas. After that it was sanding and refilling until it was ready for the first layer of primer. Sanding and priming had to be repeated until the surface was ready to receive the silver paint.

During the research an image of the two Martin Porsche in a garage suggested that the yellow Sonauto Porsche was part of Porsches engagement in Le Mans that year. That brought up the decision to make all three cars. The fact that the #48 Porsche had been one the earlier projects and the decals were still available, speeded up the process. The decals for the Martini #46 and #46 were made to fit the modified AFX body.

The fact that it has taken some time and skill to realize the two Martini Porsche make the two cars very special. It seems no one else ever attempted to make these models in h0 (1:64) before. Two 911 of that year raced at the Taiga Florio. #8 with Herbert Muller and Gijs van Lennep would win that year. #9 with Leo Kinnunenand Claude Haldi in the cockpit ended up in 3rd place. Both cars are still on the agenda. Hopefully those will materialize in the near future.

Porsche 917K at 24 Hours Daytona and 12 Hours Sebring 1971

Custom Porsche 917K Slot Cars - Forgotten Treasures Part II

Take it easy

The plan was to customize some cars without to altering details on the body. Some Porsche 917K had been on the list for a while. Martin Racing and GULF livery were priorities. In 1971 GULF and Martini Porsche took part in the 24h Daytona. Information on the race itself seems rare.

Images of the wining Porsche #2 with Pedro Rodriguez and Jackie Oliver are easily found. Were it is more difficult with the rest of the pack. Images are a necessary source to replicate the livery of each car. Eventually graphics are modified to fit the AFX Porsche 917 proportions. In case of the GULF Porsche it is easy as the orange accents are painted on. The MARTINI blue, light blue and red stripping is trickier.

Over the years, several AFX Porsche, whether 917, 911 or 908-03, unintentionally received a Martini Livery. From the early 1970s, when it became legal to advertise non motorsport related products on the race cars, Martini Racing and Porsche started a successful partnership. Once it became obvious how many Porsche already featured the Martini Racing design, the next step was to make as many 911 RSR, 908-03 or 917 as possible. Some of the 917 had been made some years ago. Now the results did not seem pleasing any longer. It was time to replace those with contemporary models

The third Martini & Rossi Racing Porsche 917K is the 12h Sebring 1971 winner with Vic Elford and Gérard Larrousse, a replacement for a model that had been sold some time ago.

Porsche 917K Daytona GULF John Wyer 1971

The other successful Sponsorship with Porsche, or lets say John Wyer Racing, was with GULF oil company. The striking colour concept of the light blue with orange accents is simple and compelling. As you know, John Wyer Racing, was also successful with the FORD GT40 winning Le Mans two years in a row – 1968 (Pedro Rodríguez and Lucien Bianchi) and 1969 (Jacky Ickx and Jackie Oliver) - Link. To replicate the blue and orange on a slot car seemed to be rather difficult. Now you can acutely acquire airbrush paints from various brands to match the original paint.

Also these slot car customs were meant to be simple builds The GULF Porsche will receive this additional wing on the rear. It is to difficult to ignore. With the next round of GULF blue cars, the wings should be painted. But this can take some time, because there are always other projects poping up to consume the time and energy.

The next MARTINI Porsche are waiting to be materialize. A replacement for the 24 hours Le Mans 1971 winner will follow, two participating Porsches 911 Carrera RS at the Targa Florio 1973, all with interesting modifications.

he Porsche 917 is a race car that gave Porsche its first overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. Powered by the Type 912 flat-12 engine of 4.5, 4.9, or 5 litres, the 917/30 Can Am variant was capable of a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 2.3 seconds, 0–124 mph (200 km/h) in 5.3 seconds, and a top speed of up to 240 mph (390 km/h).This is not, however, representative of the majority of 917s. The highest official speed ever clocked for a 917 at Le Mans is 362 km/h or 224.4 mph.
