A rare gathering of FORD GT40s at Forest Hill

The FORD GT40 is not only a racing legend. If there is a form follows design paradigma the FORD GT40 would be one. It would be a dream come true to drive or at least sit in one of these cars once. From my childhood, reading car magazines, absorbing images of Lamborghinis, Jaguars, Porsche, Panthera, the GT40 stood out to me. Years later even more.

Slot Cars provides the grounds to explore the fascination for many things, for example the GT40. Many examples of race cars in the late 60s and 70s display striking liveries. I am intrigued by the idee of replicating the looks in a smaller scale. Many aspects are compelling. It starts with the bold graphics of the time and continues to the colors chosen. Compared to contemporary liveries on racecars, with an endless number of details, it is the simplicity and the personal touch, that make the example look interesting and underline the cars design.

Tomy AFX made a beautiful version of the FORD GT40 MkII and offered clear and white bodies to customize. Because the cars were easily accessible for a reasonable price, no one thought about stacking up bodies for future projects. Some came my way and spent some time stored in cases. Until the GT40 caught my interest again and started exploring the web for inspiration.

Giving it a personal touch – Customizing Slot Cars

Customizing slot cars consists of many steps. Fitting the body to chassis, deciding on rims and tires, making decals for the particular body, painting, detailing, decaling, clear coating. Usually, summer is the time for me to get into customizing. Setting up the air brush for more than one car and painting several bodies at once seems to be more efficient than painting one at the time. It was not different with the FORD GT40s.

If you like historic race cars and you also like h0 slot cars, you will not find to many of the iconic race cars ready to buy, collect or race in that scale. There are some Porsche, Ferrari, Ford GT40 and Cobra Daytona’s available, that can be converted into one of the legendary cars to be found on popular classic car meetings these days. To escape the limitations of h0, customizing bodies becomes a necessity. The variation of slot cars available in larger scales can be very tempting. When it comes to track building the size would be a drawback. The combination of the two, modelling slot cars and a slot tracks, offers more options. This is why making unique cars in 1:64 has become fascinating challenge. What can be achieved?

Racing Legends h0 - Porsche at Le Mans 1970 - ho Slot Cars

In case of the Porsche 910, 907 or 906 Carrera the TYCO 908 has proven to be a good starting point. The bodies even allow to swop the chassis for the preferred AFX Magnatraction. Modifications on the front wheel wells create a better look. With the rear exhaust removed, altered air intakes and side vents added, the body resembles some of the significant features. Proportions of doors and roof, rear deck lid, head lights have not been changed. With the almost correct graphics the Porsches are a good interpretation of the original race cars.

The growing collection h0 slot cars from the 24 hours Le Mans 1970 was never intended. In the beginning the collection of resin bodies by Ryotaro +R Models

drew my interest. At the time the focus was mainly on the Ferrari 512. The AFX Porsche 917 could be transformed into the race winning car and some of the other teams. Customizing various Porsche 911 on bases of the AFX Porsche 911 Carrera brought up the idea of making some of the interesting Porsche 911S of the race. The 910 and 907 followed. Once again, I was intrigued by the liveries of two Porsche @ Le Mans. The Cachia - Bondy #70 and HCC Skiwear, two cars, representing the 70s approach in design and fashion, with bright colors and bold graphics. Because the decals were not available in 1:64 scale, it was necessary to custom make those as well. Researching logos and type from the area is time consuming but will sometimes reveal interesting aspects. Not all sponsors have survived to the very day. Therefore, information is scarce in many cases. Today we think in corporate design, including a color code. It seems in the 70s people would use what was available. The cars would participate in races and were not considered irreplaceable artifacts.

The bodies for the Porsche 911 RSR derive from the AFX Porsche 934/5. The body had to be heavily modified in the front and back. The fenders were flared slightly. Resin bodies were casted from a prototype. Some of the cars feature an interior. The ones in question are still in need of a cockpit. All the custom bulit Porsche 911 RSR and 934 sport the AFX Magnatraction chassis with custom wheels, trying to represent the original. A good source for inserts is Custom FX. Anthony Hill makes photo etched inserts of the popular BBS or Fuchs rims.

Every custom built goes thru various steps from preparation to detailing to finishing to provide the desired quality. With each built experience grows and ideas change how to approach a model. Discovering the sources for correct team colors made live easier. Judging color from images is very difficult. The same car looks very different on each picture. Especially the Vaillant green has proven to be tricky. The yellow and green of these two featured cars in this post have been carefully chosen. Bright green and Orange, sometime even fluorescent, were popular. VW used the bright colors on a Jeans Käfer with the younger customers in the 1970s.

Die 24 Stunden von Le Mans gehören sicherlich zu den am besten dokumentierten Rennen. Von vielen Rennwagen, die bei den 24 Stunden gestartet sind, findet man im Internet Aufnahmen. Zwei Modelle vom Porsche 934 sollen hier nochmals genauer vorgestellt werden.

Sehr wahrscheinlich wurden viele Modelle von diesen Fahrzeugen gebaut. Im Maßstab h0, bzw. 1:64, gibt es davon nicht viele für die Modellrennbahn, zu klein ist die Auswahl an Modellen. Immer wieder müssen Unikate angefertigt werden. Als Basis für die Porsche 934 wurde der Porsche 935 von AFX verwendet. Front Spoiler, Heck und Seiten wurden modifiziert um später aus Kunstharz Karosserien abzuformen.

Für das Modell musste lange nach dem markanten Schriftzug/Logo von J&Co. gesucht werden. In vielen Fällen sind Vorlagen für die Grafiken nur schwer zu finden. 1976 war J&Co offenbar eine erfolgreiche Marke. Heute sind nur noch schwer Spuren zu finden. Das Gleiche gilt auch für denver oder der skurrile Schriftzug Garage Bertapelle. Eine hilfreiche Quelle ist oftmals Racing Sport Cars (http://www.racingsportscars.com/), mit einer umfangreichen Datenbank und vielen Bildern.

Crossing the line: Porsche 934 Denver - Co - Vaillant

Alle Grafiken wurden anhand verschiedener Vorlagen nachgezeichnet und auf die Modelle angepasst. Durch die umfangreiche Erfahrung als Grafik Designer ergeben sich einige Vorteile. Die fertigen Grafiken werden bei Decals Print gedruckt. Der Service und die Qualität sind schon seit Jahren sehr zufriedenstellen.

Ein weiterer Aspekt beim Modellbau ist die Farbwahl. Will man ein Modell nach dem Original anfertigen, sollte auch die Farbe stimmen. Zu Beginn wurde der Versuch unternommen, die Farben anhand von Fotos nachzuempfinden. Natürlich sind Farbfotos aus der Zeit nicht farbverbindlich und die Reproduktion im Internet verfälscht das Ergebnis zusätzlich.

Slot Car Model Porsche 934 Le Mans GT Class Winner 1976 / 1981

Zum Glück findet man heute verschiedene Anbieter die für den Modellbau Lacke in Originalfarbe anbieten. Zero Paint oder Gravity Colors (https://gravity-colors.com/) bieten eine große, auf Hersteller und Fahrzeuge abgestimmt, Auswahl. Allerdings wurden für die beiden Modelle Farben aus dem Bestand verwendet. Das Pink für den Denver Porsche war für den 917 vorgesehen. Als Rot für J&Co. Porsche wurde ein dunkler Ton gewählt, der aus der Alfa Romeo Farbpalette stammt.

Porsche 911: Ein Rennwagen mit vielen Gesichtern/A Racecar with many Faces

Das Design der Porsche Teams in den 1970zigern und 80zigern repräsentiert auch den Spirit der Zeit. Besonders auffallend sind dabei die Fahrzeuge von Kremer Porsche Racing im psychedelischem Design und die Martini Racing Team Porsche mit coolem Streifen Dekor in vielen Variationen. Kremer setzt auf die Kraft der Farbe, Martini auf Silber, Blau und Rot. Die im Modell nicht ganz einfach zu reproduzierenden Dekors wurden bereits auf einigen Slot Cars im Maßstab 1:64 übertragen. Für die 911 kam als Basis der AFX Porsche Carrera zum Einsatz. Decals wurden auf die Modelle sorgfältig vom Original adaptiert und professionell gedruckt. Alle Autos sind mit einem Schutzlack versiegelt.

Für dieses Modell wurde die Karosserie erheblich modifiziert. Frontspoiler erhielt die für den 911 S typische Form und zusätzliche Scheinwerfer auf der Haube befestigt.

Von diesem Fahrzeug sind im Internet nur bedingt brauchbare Bilder zu finden. Matthias Pohl hat vor einiger Zeit das gesamte Starterfeld der 24h Le Mans 1970 im Maßstab 1:32 nachgebaut. Auf Anfrage erhielt ich von Ihm Bilder der Sponsoren und konnte so entsprechende Vorlagen für die Decals erstellen. Dafür möchte ich mich an dieser Stelle nochmals bedanken.

Die hier vorgestellten FORD GT40 entstanden auf Basis der Resine Modelle von Richard Picard Slot Car Innovations. Leider kann man diese Modelle heute nicht mehr kaufen. Richard Picard hatte viele schöne Bodies im Programm, die ich heute alle gerne in meiner Sammlung hätte.

Die #6 war schon vor einigen Jahren realisiert worden. Die beiden anderen Modelle kamen im letzen Jahr hinzu. Alle Autos fahren auf Tomy AFX SG+ Chassis. Die beiden GULF wurden mit AFX Felgen ausgestattet. Diese wurde nachträglich 3-farbig lackiert. Die GULF Farben sind Werksfarben von slotracing-werk.de . Diese lassen sich sehr gut mit einem Airbrush auftragen. Decals wurden, wie bei den meisten Modellen, speziell für das Modell angepasst und bei Decals Print produziert.

Der Dritte im GT40 wurde nach Vorbild nachempfunden, das bei den Recheren mein Interesse weckte. Wiedereinmal eine Lindgrüne Lackierung. Offensichtlich ist es ein von Gelscoe Motorsportrestauriertes Fahrzeug. Die Farbe wurde frei nachempfunden. Dekor kommt aus der Restkiste.

1963 verließ Wyer Aston Martin und leitete 1964 die Rennaktivitäten von Ford beim 24-Stunden-Rennen von Le Mans. 1965 gründete er eine eigene Rennmannschaft. Sein Partner war John Willment, der Schwager des deutschen Rennfahrers Hans Herrmann. Die John Wyer Automotive wurde zum bestimmenden Rennteam dieser Epoche. 1967 ging das Team noch mit dem Mirage M1, eigentlich ein Leichtgewicht-Ford GT40, an den Start, der wenig Erfolg hatte.
